What is community at Soul?

Riders at Soul are notorious for their loyalty, which is strongly tied to the culture and community created around the brand. Riders form rituals together and make friends at classes. With that information in mind, our team wanted to explore new ways to help riders engage with the Soul Community within our products.

Competitive Analysis & User Interviews

We collected a wide range of examples and UI patterns for different types of social interactions and community features from products within and outside of the fitness industry. We also partnered with our external agency, Prolific interactive to conduct user interviews to collect qualitative data about what the concept community means to our riders.

A concept displaying how we might want to introduce this social feature in the app that uses a new content card in the main rider dashboard promoting the high-level benefits.

Design Ideation & Concepts

Based on our early research, defining what community means at Soul as a product translated to “Who are the people I trust and what classes are they taking? What studios and which instructors are they taking them with?

With these questions in mind, we decided to focus on a set of social features that focused on rider activity. We then identified the important touch points within the rider journey in the mobile app that we could potentially implement opportunities for engagement.

Invite friends to join

One of the features that we recommended to help riders engage with other riders in the Soul community was to create an easy way for them to invite their friends to join them in any upcoming classes.

When users open the SoulCycle app, the first thing they see is their rider dashboard. I proposed surfacing a direct call to action to invite their friends inline with the “Upcoming Class” card.

Key views for the “Invite your friends” interaction.

Friends Riding Section

We also proposed a new content block, a “Friends Riding” section that displayed upcoming classes that friends within your community were taking with a direct call to action to join the class. We also suggested displaying recommended classes based on popular instructors that friends have taken previously.

An example of a potential updated profile page updated with a new navigation that includes a friends tab and the Studio Schedule page displaying friends who are booked in classes.
